
Edgewood FIRE & EMS is noted as having one of the premier Public Education Programs throughout the State of Kentucky . Started in the early 1990's, Lieutenant Joseph “Fireman Joe” Stambush created our Fire and Life Safety Educational Programs. From these early years, “Fireman Joe” has turned this program into a model for fire departments throughout the country.
“Fireman Joe” has been a leading advocate of “Pub Ed” throughout the nation for a number of years. Recipient of many national, state, and regional awards, “Fireman Joe's” mission is drawn to the education and safety of all citizens but especially children. “Fireman Joe”, Chairman of the Kentucky Firefighters Assn Public Education Committee and State of Kentucky 's' coordinator of the “Risk Watch” program, has implemented this program in all Edgewood schools. Joe also works closely with senior citizens, businesses, church groups, civic groups throughout the communities.
Typical programs delivered include the following:
RISK WATCH: Risk Watch, under the direction of the Champion Management Team, Risk Watch in Kentucky , is a school based, fire and life safety program is designed for presentation in the school curriculum's from Pre-Kindergarten to Eighth Grades. Under the direction of “Fireman Joe”, statewide leader for the Risk Watch Project in Kentucky , teachers use a grade appropriate curriculum books and enhancement materials to include activities and props, to promote eight different safety topics of unintentional injury prevention. Such as; Fire & Burn Prevention – motor vehicle safety – choking, suffocation, and strangulation prevention – falls prevention – firearms safety – bike and pedestrian safety & water safety.
PUBLIC EDUCATION SEMINARS: Workshop and on facility programs in a variety of safety topics. Fire Extinguisher Training w/live burns
First Aid – Emergency Evacuation Planning – Detection Equipment
Learn Not to Burn – Risk Watch – Child Safety Programs.
GROUP PRESENTATIONS: Special Fire and Life Safety Presentations to Church or Civic Groups, School classroom programs, neighborhood watch or safety programs, Senior Citizen Programs etc.
FIREHOUSE OR STATION TOURS : Bring your group or class up to the fire station to visit where the fireman work and live while on duty. See all the fire trucks, watch a demonstration of safety equipment, see the clothes (Turnout Gear) the fireman wear, sit behind the wheel of a firetruck or ambulance, watch a fun but educational video and learn about fire & life safety from Fireman Joe.
HOME SAFETY SURVEYS: Fireman Joe or one of our trained Fire/EMS personnel will visit your home to offer tips about how your home can be safe from fire or other safety problems.
SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS: Smoke Alarms and CO Detectors are provided to residents of Edgewood at no cost, Fireman Joe or FIRE/EMS Personnel will install this vital safety equipment upon request at no cost.
CPR TRAINING: CPR Classes and recertification classes are provided by our certified CPR Instructors at the fire station or on site.
Vial of Life: A proven tool given to our residents to alert emergency personnel to medicines or medical conditions in case the person may be disabled or unconscious. A tube vial is kept in a special location containing medical information, medicines or other special instructions about the patient or resident. Contact the fire station for more information about this vital life saving program.
CERT TRAINING (Community Emergency Response Team)
A group of trained volunteers who are trained in emergency first aid, CPR, fire extinguishers, neighborhood watch programs, wellness checks, can transport or assist shut ins, assist at local emergency situations, such as floods, tornadoes etc. This training will be provided to our community several times during the year at our fire headquarters.
